How to Talk About Suicide in Your Community

Today, September 10, is World Suicide Prevention Day, which is an opportunity to reflect on how we can foster meaningful conversations about suicide in our communities. By speaking openly and with compassion, we can raise awareness, encourage people to seek help, and remind one another that hope, and support are always within reach.

Start the conversation about suicide with the community

Talking openly about mental health and suicide in our communities is crucial. It not only raises awareness but also helps break down stigma around mental health challenges, playing a vital role in supporting suicide prevention efforts. It also encourages those who need extra support to seek services. Surrounding individuals and families with supportive neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and services is critical. Communities that work together intentionally and proactively can change the narrative about mental health and suicide. Those at risk of suicide, or those close to someone who died by suicide, are deeply affected by our language and openness to communicate. What we say should always be respectful and show care and concern.

How to encourage a positive narrative as you talk about suicide

  1. Focus on normalizing mental health over stigma reduction.
  1. Promote help-seeking and sharing support services or resources for those in need.
  1. Emphasize that suicide is preventable and that there are actions individuals can take if they are having thoughts of suicide or know others who are or might be. Share resources such as 988 Lifeline and established local service providers and crisis centers.
  1. Know the warning signs and risks, and equally important, know what is adequate to protect individuals (protective factors).
