Our self-pay assessments are available for children, adolescents, and young adults ages 6 and up, conducted independently of school district timelines or insurance approvals.
What is psychoeducational testing?
Psychoeducational testing, also known as educational testing, is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by licensed psychologists and psychometrists to assess how a child learns, thinks, and processes information. It combines cognitive, academic, behavioral, and emotional assessments to identify learning differences and attention challenges, as well as other factors that affect school performance. It provides specific, actionable recommendations for support at school, home, and in clinical settings.

What does educational testing evaluate?
A basic evaluation tells you if a learning challenge exists. A comprehensive one tells you what kind, why it’s happening, and what to do about it at school, at home, and clinically.
Our psychoeducational testing covers more ground than most in a single testing process:
- Cognitive Evaluation — We go beyond basic cognitive screening to assess reasoning, memory, and processing speed at a level that reveals how your child learns, not just whether they’re struggling.
- Full Academic Achievement Testing — A thorough look at academic strengths and weaknesses across all subject areas, uncovering hidden challenges and identifying where targeted support will have the most impact.
- Targeted Skill Screeners — Additional screeners for reading, math, and writing that pinpoint the specific nature of the challenge — not just that a problem exists, but what kind it is and what will help.
- Attention & Executive Function Testing — A more in-depth look at how your child focuses, plans, organizes, and manages their behavior than most evaluations provide.
- Social-Emotional & Projective Evaluations — Qualitative assessments that give us a richer, more complete picture of your child’s emotional and social experience — an area many evaluations skip entirely.
- ADHD-Specific Insight — We assess not just whether ADHD is present, but how it specifically affects your child’s school performance, so recommendations translate directly into accommodations that work.
- Gifted & Talented Evaluation — We assess intellectual giftedness to support eligibility determinations for gifted programs and services, tailored to meet the requirements of your child’s school or district when possible.
From results to real next steps
Our psychoeducational evaluations conclude with a clinically actionable report and a personalized set of recommendations across three areas:
- Academic — Specific accommodations and strategies for school, including IEP and 504 plan support, standardized testing accommodations, preferential seating, extended time, and 1:1 tutoring recommendations
- Home-based — Practical recommendations your family can implement right away
- Clinical — Where appropriate, recommendations for therapy, medication management, or other clinical support — and because Family Care Center offers comprehensive care, those next steps can happen here or with your current provider
We also help connect families with community resources when additional support is needed outside our walls.
When is psychoeducational testing helpful?
Testing may be the right next step if your child or loved one:
- Struggles in school despite putting in effort
- Has a hard time with reading, writing, or math
- Has trouble focusing, staying organized, or completing tasks
- Needs accommodations or a 504/IEP
- May be intellectually gifted, but isn’t being challenged
- Has received a diagnosis but still lacks a clear plan for what to do next

Our educational assessment process
Appointment 1 — Initial Intake Approximately 1.5 hours | In-person or telehealth
An initial session to gather background, discuss goals, understand your child’s history, and determine the right evaluation plan.
Appointment 2* — Tailored Testing Approximately 4 hours | In-person
A licensed psychometrist conducts comprehensive testing tailored to your child’s specific referral questions and background. Testing includes academic, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional measures selected for your child’s individual needs.
Appointment 3 — Results & Recommendations Approximately 1 hour | In-person or telehealth
Results, findings, and actionable recommendations reviewed together with your family. You receive a detailed, easy-to-understand written report with diagnostic impressions and specific next steps.
*Tailored testing may be broken up into several appointments depending on individual needs.

Educational assessments are not covered by insurance, particularly when the purpose is academic, accommodation-related, or not tied to a medical diagnosis.
We offer a clear, private pay structure for this comprehensive service, with a total cost of $3,000 and flexible payment options designed to make care more accessible:
- 50% of the total is due prior to testing
- The remaining balance is divided into 3 manageable monthly payments

Frequently Asked Questions about psychoeducational testing
School evaluations are conducted by district staff to determine eligibility for special education services. They are limited in scope and designed to meet eligibility thresholds, not to provide a comprehensive clinical picture. A private psychoeducational evaluation is more thorough, independent, and produces detailed recommendations that go beyond what a school evaluation is designed to provide. Results from a private evaluation can be used to support IEP and 504 requests.
Psychoeducational testing focuses on learning, academic achievement, attention, and educational accommodations. It is self-pay and open to the community. Clinical psychological evaluation supports diagnosis and treatment planning for established patients and is billed through insurance. Family Care Center offers both — if you are unsure which is right for your child, contact us and we can help determine the appropriate evaluation type.
Psychoeducational testing can identify learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia; attention disorders including ADHD; intellectual giftedness; processing speed deficits; executive function challenges; and social-emotional factors affecting school performance. The evaluation is designed to go beyond a single diagnosis to provide a complete picture of how your child learns.
A comprehensive evaluation can support requests for extended time on tests, preferential seating, reduced distraction environments, 1:1 tutoring, modified assignments, IEP eligibility, 504 plan development, and standardized testing accommodations including SAT, ACT, and college-level testing.
No. Psychoeducational testing is not covered by insurance when the purpose is academic or accommodation-related. Family Care Center offers a self-pay structure of $3,000 total, with 50% ($1,500) due prior to testing and the remaining balance divided into three $500 monthly payments.
You receive a detailed written report and a feedback session with the evaluating psychologist to review findings and recommendations. Recommendations cover academic accommodations, home-based strategies, and clinical next steps. If therapy or medication management is indicated, Family Care Center can provide those services directly.
Yes. Our evaluations are available for children ages 6 and up through young adulthood. We do not currently offer psychoeducational testing for children under 6.
Yes. Our evaluations are designed for learning, attention, and educational concerns. They are not appropriate for legal proceedings or custody evaluations, or for competency or non-learning-based disability assessments. If you are unsure whether testing is the right fit for your situation, contact us and we can help determine the appropriate next step.
Autism spectrum disorder or ASD screening may be incorporated into a psychoeducational evaluation when clinically indicated, and results can include a rule-out notation if autism spectrum disorder may be present. Comprehensive autism diagnostic evaluations are not currently offered at Family Care Center.
Yes. While our evaluations are designed primarily for school-aged children ages 6 and up, we also evaluate adolescents and young adults who may be seeking accommodations for college, professional licensing exams, or workplace support.
Yes. Our Gifted & Talented evaluations assess intellectual giftedness and are designed to meet the eligibility requirements of your child’s school or district when possible.
