Family Care Center Grows to Support Colorado Mental Health Needs

When considering the Colorado mental health landscape, we’ve seen a mix of progress and ongoing challenges. The state has experienced ups and downs in national rankings for access to care. Youth mental health, in particular, shows troubling trends. The prevalence of mental illness also remains high.

Despite these challenges, Family Care Center has made significant strides in expanding access to mental health services across Colorado. This expansion reflects the organization’s commitment to providing high-quality care in response to demand for mental health services.

Colorado’s mental health landscape trends

1. Fluctuating national rankings

According to Mental Health America (MHA), Colorado’s national ranking for mental health care access has experienced some decline in recent years. While the state remains in the upper half of the rankings, these numbers indicate that maintaining and improving access to mental health services continues to be a significant challenge.

2. Youth mental health concerns

The state of youth mental health is one of Colorado’s most pressing issues. The rankings for youth mental health care access reveal concerns, with Colorado ranked 40th in 2024. These statistics highlight the urgent need for more robust mental health services for children and adolescents, as early intervention is crucial for preventing long-term mental health issues.

3. High prevalence of mental illness

Colorado consistently ranks high in the prevalence of mental illness among its residents. In the most recent MHA report, the state ranked 49th in 2024. This indicates that a significant portion of the population experiences mental health challenges, which further strains the state’s mental health care system. Even with relatively better access to care compared to other states, the high demand for services underscores the need for continued expansion and improvement.

4. Behavioral health integration

Colorado has been at the forefront of integrating behavioral health with primary care, a trend that has been crucial in improving access to mental health services. This integration helps provide more comprehensive care and reduces the stigma of seeking mental health services.

Family Care Center’s role in expanding Colorado mental health care access

Family Care Center has been instrumental in addressing the mental health crisis in Colorado. Since 2021, the organization has expanded from two to 18 clinics, significantly increasing access to mental health services in cities such as Denver, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins. This growth has been a strategic response to the rising demand for mental health care in metropolitan areas where the population is dense and the need for services is acute.

By targeting these urban hubs, it’s reaching more people and addressing the unique challenges of city life—like high stress, economic struggles and the relentless pace. So, more residents can get the support they need right where they live.

Commitment to quality and comprehensive care

Despite the rapid growth, Family Care Center remains committed to providing high-quality, comprehensive care. The organization adopts a patient-centered approach, offering personalized treatment plans that cater to the unique needs of each individual.

This includes a wide range of evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a cutting-edge treatment for depression that has been particularly effective for patients who have not responded to traditional therapies.

Addressing Colorado mental health workforce challenges

One of the significant challenges in Colorado has been the shortage of mental health professionals, particularly in urban areas where the demand is high. Family Care Center has tackled this issue by investing in recruiting and retaining a diverse team of mental health providers, including therapists, psychiatrists and TMS specialists.

This has allowed the organization to expand its services while maintaining high standards of care, ensuring that patients receive timely and effective treatment.

Continued growth and innovation

Family Care Center’s plans for the future include further expansion of services in Colorado, including intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for mental health and psychological testing.

This continued growth is part of the organization’s broader strategy to not only meet the current demand for mental health services but also anticipate future needs as the state’s population continues to grow and mental health challenges become more prevalent.

Leading the way in Colorado mental health care

As Colorado grapples with mental health care challenges, Family Care Center stands out as a leader in providing high-quality services. Growing from two to 18 clinics in just a few years, it is committed to addressing the mental health crisis in major metropolitan areas. By investing in new clinics, innovative treatments and a multidisciplinary team, Family Care Center ensures more Coloradans get the care they need.
