6 Essential Steps to Getting Started with TMS

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment for various neurological and mental health conditions. It’s FDA-approved and has proven to be safe when treating depression, anxiety, OCD, or other conditions.

Many patients choose to start TMS because it complements and augments their medication and talk therapy. Plus, it’s covered by most major insurance and has no systemic or full-body side effects.

Here’s a brief overview of the steps you can take when getting started with TMS treatment, along with a general explanation of what happens during the coordination and treatment process.

By understanding what to expect when coordinating TMS treatment, you can embark on this therapeutic journey with confidence, knowing that you’re taking steps toward improved mental health and well-being.

Step two: schedule your TMS consultation

Step three: verify insurance and assess costs

Financial transparency is crucial as you’re getting started with TMS. Our dedicated team will verify your insurance coverage, ensuring you have a clear understanding of the costs associated with your TMS treatment.

TMS insurance coverage

TMS is covered by most major insurance, and our specialists will work with your insurance to obtain authorization and an explanation of your particular plan’s cost benefits.

TMS out-of-pocket costs

Before getting started with TMS, it’s important to understand any out-of-pocket costs that you may incur. Generally speaking, the treatment cost will vary based on your particular insurance plan and the number of sessions needed to get you feeling well. Ask us about financial options that support out-of-pocket costs not covered by insurance.

Step four: schedule your first visit

Your first visit marks the beginning of your transformative journey. Coordinate with the clinic to schedule your initial, one-hour-long TMS session. This is where your path to improved mental health truly begins.

Step five: start your ongoing TMS treatment sessions

Our TMS patients typically see us five days a week for an average of 30 sessions. Each treatment session generally lasts about 30 minutes. During treatment, you’ll sit in a comfortable chair, wearing ear plugs, with the magnetic coil placed on your head. When the machine is turned on, you’ll hear clicking sounds and feel a gentle tapping on your head. The procedure will last about 30 minutes, and you’ll remain awake and alert. Most patients engage in normal conversation, relax and even watch videos during their treatment.

After each treatment, you can return to your normal daily activities, and this includes the ability to drive a vehicle.

Step six: communicating results to your referring doctor

Our highly trained staff will consistently monitor your symptoms and possible side effects while using a measurement-based approach to individualize your experience for the best results.

As you progress through TMS treatment, it’s essential to keep your referring doctor in the loop. Step six involves your Family Care Center treatment team communicating your results, ensuring a collaborative approach to your overall well-being.
